JHONG Jia-Yu was born in Hualien, Taiwan in 1997. She graduated from the Department of Industrial Design, Tatung University, and is currently studying a master's degree in New Media Art at the Department of Multimedia Art at the National Taiwan University of Arts. Jhong specializes in the creation of cross-field performances, including new media space installations, and is committed to the exploration of multi-dimensional relationship and positioning of human beings in modern society. Her method wanders between design and artistic thinking, and integrating visual and auditory concepts. Utilizing her background in industrial design combined with new media technology, she presents three-dimensional characteristics to her work and performances. Her works often portray a conceptual reflection of symbolism and rationality, transforming abstract thinking into concrete practice, and projecting social status and self-reflection through interactive artwork.

Art Work
"Connection" is a new media art installation combining light, space, and music to create a dramatic three-dimensional reflection of our inner emotions and the essence that connects us all. This performance was created to open a dialogue on the wonders and burdens we experience in life, by highlighting the effects of external influences on our emotions and the unique perspectives on how individuals experience them. This performance tells the story of such experiences by navigating through the fluctuation of emotions-birth, curiosity, passion, frustration, loneliness, and hope-therefore providing a connection and sense of belonging between us and offering a sense of comfort for those who feel alone in life.
With looming threat of war, fear of sickness, global warming, even social media, disruption is present in every aspect of our lives. We are always in the process of creation and destruction, and with ongoing global turmoil keeping us in a perpetual state of stress, connecting with others has never been more important. Especially if we isolate ourselves in thinking we are the only ones in distress. The modern age of science has shown a multitude of research outlining neurological uniqueness in each human being. Every individual sees color, objects, or metaphysical instances differently. We are unique, and alone in this way. But the fundamental principle that keeps us connected is the ever-fluctuating, and sometimes unstable, cycle of emotions we share. The manifestation of this concept integrates light, space, music, and installation. The performance cycles between each state in succession, narrating the fluctuation of emotions. The lights and music are used in conjunction, further narrating each state of mind and the transition between them. The music was created to mirror the spirit of each of the six emotional states. The use of light represents external influences reflecting, passing through, or absorbing into us. The installation's materials (including glass, acrylic, and metal) are used as physical representations of internal emotions. The material is multi-colored, representing the presence of each emotion on the installation. The installation itself represents our life experiences. It lies center stage, allowing space for the audience to roam, experiencing the artwork from multiple angles. As they scatter around the empty space, the audience themselves becomes part of the performance. Each member of the audience becomes an individual, in the same space, looking at their life experience (the installation), but from a different perspective.
In the words of Orson Welles, "we are born alone… and we die alone." While the implication of this statement might seem daunting, the journey seems less frightening if we look at it from the perspective of what connects us. This immersive performance hopes to impart to the audience that even in our darkest moments, when loneliness prevails, we can take comfort in the fact that (while unique to each person) we all share the same cycle of emotions; and in this way, we are not alone. No matter race, class, or gender, we all feel the happiness and sadness life has to offer.
