吳柏葳|Pu-Wei Wu

PUWEI Wu (b. 1999, Keelung) is currently studying painting in the MFA program at Taipei National University of the Arts. His work explores how contemporary painting can act and respond to the experience of images. His practice has two main directions: site-specific works that focus on space, and paintings on canvas that use images to discuss visual history and cultural identity. In his canvas works, he is interested in the illusion of the painted surface and the material quality of paint. Using characters from Japanese Tokusatsu (special effects) films, he builds layered paintings with detailed craftsmanship to reflect the complex filming methods of those movies. His works also look back at the links between monsters and war, reflecting on identity, fear, and self-projection from a Taiwanese perspective shaped by colonial history. Through both concept and form, Wu explores new possibilities for painting across different mediums and ways of presentation.
