陳冠彰|Guan-Jhang Chen
Chen Guan-Jhang holds a PhD from the Graduate Institute of Art Creation and Theory at Tainan National University of the Arts. In 2009, he started collaborating with Siraya shamans, known as “ang-yi,” and conducted field studies focused on cultural research and story collection. During this process, he has explored in depth issues such as language loss, multilingual translation, and “island-language” narratives.
His research later extended to Tsou Indigenous communities in the upper reaches of the Tsengwen River, where he observed how hunters negotiate and balance traditional knowledge with contemporary changes. At the same time, he continues to write multi-species ethnographies of the Tsengwen River basin, exploring the complex and dynamic relationships between humans, animals, plants, and landscapes.
Chen’s works present the thought processes and outcomes of cultural studies through archives, writing, video images, and installations. He has participated in writing and editorial projects including Kao Pue Art Journal, ACT Art Critique of Taiwan, Re-Turn: The Tropic of Cancer (Chiayi Art Museum’s biannual journal), and Hunters Leading the Route. In 2021, Hunters Leading the Route: A Visual Chronicle of Tracing the Tsengwen River to Its Source won the Non-Fiction Book Award at the 45th Golden Tripod Awards for Publications. In 2025, he received the Doctoral Dissertation Award of the Li Yi-Yuan Memorial Scholarship from the Taiwan Society for Anthropology and Ethnology.
