約翰・維亞|John Vea

John Vea is an Ōtautahi Christchurch–based artist working across sculpture, video, and performance. His practice examines narratives of labour, migration, and gentrification as they are lived and experienced across the Pacific. Drawing from stories gathered through everyday interactions, Vea often re-enacts these encounters to foreground voices and perspectives that sit outside dominant Western frameworks. Through humour, physicality, and critical reflection, Vea’s work offers a powerful counterpoint to Western meta-narratives, centring the lived realities of Pacific communities and diasporas. His practice is grounded in collaboration, observation, and storytelling, using performance and material gestures to make visible the social, economic, and cultural forces shaping contemporary life in the Pacific. Vea has exhibited widely in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. Recent exhibitions include Christchurch Art Gallery (2025), the Busan Biennale (2024), and Gus Fisher Gallery (2023). His work has also been shown at 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art (2019), Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki (2018), Dunedin Public Art Gallery (2018), and the Honolulu Biennale (2017). He completed his PhD at Auckland University of Technology in 2021 and is currently a Lecturer at the University of Canterbury.
