Kian-Sam Yong

Kian-Sam Yong

Yong Kian Sam (b. 1996) was born in Kuala Lumpur. His early career in Malaysia involved professional guitar repair and active participation in the local music scene. In 2016, he moved to Taiwan to study at the Department of Fine Arts, Taipei National University of the Arts. Since encountering sculpture, he has been integrating his deep understanding of sound into the conceptual framework of his sculptural practice.

Yong believes that the form of a sculpture is not limited to the final finished object; rather, it is a "totality of process" with topological significance. Consequently, the sounds generated during the making of his sculptures are consciously preserved, becoming an inseparable part of the work. These sounds signify both the transformation of materials and the inherent temporality of labor.

His practice focuses on the interaction between sound and material within the workspace—such as the vibration of a plucked guitar string, the sharp crack of stone breaking, or the rhythmic pulse of a nail gun. These sounds, born in the moment of labor, form the core of his creative inquiry. Through the language of sculpture, Yong responds to his own state of labor, transforming sound into a perceptible trace. This allows viewers to experience the accumulated labor-time and the evolutionary process embedded within each piece.

Major milestones include receiving the “Outstanding Emerging Artist Award – ‘Seeing’ Urban Space” in 2019; presenting the solo exhibition Stone. Motor 000 – Yang Chien-Sheng in 2020; winning the First Prize at the 6th Li Bao Contemporary Sculpture Award in 2024; and being selected in 2025 for the 2026 NextArtTainan.
