2015臺南新藝獎場所之間

Next Art Tainan 2015─A Site Between

「臺南新藝獎」是一個由官方獎項延伸而出,以城市空間為場域的藝術展覽。繼策展人賴依欣於2014年以「蔓藝‧共生」為題,透過新藝獎以城市空間為展示舞台的特質,以藝術為主角也同時為中介,展現台南的城市精神與氣質。城市空間作為藝術作品的舞台,也已成為新藝獎一項不同於其它官方展覽的主要特色。

延續新藝獎此一特質,以城市中的空間為舞台,其中部分的空間亦是屬於與日常生活較為貼近的非正式展示場所與空間,諸如:歷史古蹟空間、商店、咖啡館等,這些空間的其中一項特性同時為:「需要透過日常生活以及人群的流動才得以建構出的場域」。因此,本屆「臺南新藝獎」,擷取日常、空間與人群作為關鍵字,從三者的交疊作為展覽思考的切入路徑,提出「場所之間」一詞,作為此次展覽題稱,以及發想論述與展覽概念的詞彙。

所謂「場所/Site」一詞,指涉與包含的意思有,「具體的地理位置、空間的概念,以及涉入特定人類活動的地方。若進一步從英語中的日常用語來解釋,與其相關的詞彙則有「建築工地」(construction site)、「被廢棄的場域」(abandoned site)、「露營地」(campsite)到「考古遺址」(archaeological site)等[1]」。

在本展覽中,除了借用「場所/Site」一詞其原本字義上的「某種固定的、根著的、物理意義上的地點」的定義,另外援引藝評家James Meyer所提出的「功能的場域」(functional site)一詞的概念,將「場所/Site」的固定概念,延展出為帶有「移動的、游牧的」概念。James Meyer以「是一個過程,發生於場域與場域之間,是一個機構的與文本來由的標示,在身體之間的移動,它是一個暫時的東西,一個運動,一個意義之鍊,層疊的歷史」擴延出對場所一詞的界定。[2]

所謂透過人群活動所流動的場所,其實充斥於我們的日常。小範圍的場所,或許是人聲鼎沸的市集、市場或購物商場,但放大到一種人身體移動的活動場域,或許就是從城市前往郊區,或從郊區往城市移動的過程,移動過程我們或許會經過某個城市中的荒地、公園、或郊區周邊的農地等。於是從固定的場所,我們也注意到了因為進行某些人類活動,於場所之間移動過程的、原本被視為短暫的、卻僅只是被忽略、遺落、不在意的「中間景觀」(middle landscape)。[3]

「中間景觀」即為連接著象徵不同結點的「場所/Site」。這些結點無法固定單獨存在,必須透過人的前往、進出才得以產生連結。在場所間來回重複往返的移動性,在時間與空間背景的物換星移下,交錯並連結出萬物情感與關係的隱匿層疊軌跡。

此次「2015臺南新藝獎」以「場所之間」作為切入主題,一方面釋出與正式或正規美術館空間帶有距離的非正式藝術場域的展示概念;另一方面,試圖轉換與地方認同相依附的場域概念,從場所與場所之間,尋找差異、裂隙、邊界、變動與遺落的記事,開展出一種差異中的對話,以及不同框架下,社會、文化、語言、族群、個人經驗與意識的種種樣貌。

Next Art Tainan 2015─A Site Between

“Next Art Tainan” comes from the official award. It is an art exhibition that transform city spaces into platforms to show art works. After curator Lai Yi-shin used “Next Art Tainan 2014: Articipation & Nextension” as a topic that based on city spaces as a stage to exhibit art. Art is the main subject and also a medium to show the spirit and elegance of Tainan. An important character of Next Art Tainan that differs from other official awards is that city spaces are the stages for art.

Extending this character of Next Art Tainan, spaces in the city are the stages as some unofficial exhibition spaces are more related to our lives, such as historical sites, stores, coffee shops, etc. One common feature of these spaces is that “they are a field that needs to be constructed through daily lives and people’s mobility.” Therefore, Next Art Tainan 2015 takes \"daily\", \"space\", and \"people\" as its key words. The interaction of these three features is the way to think about this exhibition. “A Site Between” is the key phrase guiding the development of works surrounding the concepts of this exhibition.

Site, implies the meaning of “specific geographical location and space,” and places where human activity occurs. Other related common use of the word \"site\" in English are: “construction site,” “abandoned site,” “campsite,” and “archaeological site.”

In this exhibition, the word “site” means “some fixed, and physical geographical locations.” Art Critics James Meyer raised the concept of “functional site” that stretched the original meaning of site into a “moving and nomadic” concept. “It is a process, an operation occurring between sites, a mapping of institutional and textual filiations and the bodies that move between them. It is a temporary thing, a movement, a chain of meanings and imbricated histories.” quote from Meyer. What he said has extended the meaning of site.  

The mobile sites that make people move around actually exist in our daily lives. From some small sites such as markets, or malls, to large sites that allow people to move longer distances. For example, city to suburb or suburb to city. In the movement, we may pass some empty city grounds, parks, or suburban areas. We notice that human activities occur in fixed locations, and those sites that we by pass became “middle landscape” that are temporary, unmindful sites that are ignored by us.


“Middle landscape” is the connection that symbolizes different “sites” of different points. These points cannot exist alone. They need to contain people’s movements going through, entering and exiting, thus generating the connection. The movement of repeatedly moving back and forth between sites interlocked with whole universe’s emotions and relations with hidden tiered tracks under the change of time, space and background.

Next Art Tainan 2015 uses “A Site Between” as the topic of this exhibition. On one hand, it brings out the display differences between formal art museums that have a sense of distance and informal art spaces. On the other hand, it also tries to transform the field concept that is attached to local identities. From “A Site Between” to look for differences, cleftinesses, boundaries, transformations and abandoned memories to develop a dialogue of differences under various frameworks reflecting on society, culture, language, community, personal experience and consciousness.
