I was born and raised in Kaohsiung. There is a hill 5 minutes by walk from my home. It is a part of the Military Academy area. Mom and dad often walked me and my elder sister there on the weekend. Nature becomes the place I feel always close to and also my inspiration. I majored in English back in university and later entered the Institute of Applied Arts to study visual communications design at National (Yang Ming) Chiao Tung University. One year before my graduation, I started to attend the pottery club, and experienced the three-dimensional materials other than two-dimensional. After graduating in 2014, I started working as a graphic designer in Taipei. Besides working in front of a computer, I would always draw illustrations and make zines when I was free. At the end of 2017, I got a chance, left my job and flew to Kochi, Japan learning from the ceramist Mr. Ono Teppei. I make my own works in my free time. In 2020, I held my first solo exhibition at wad+ gallery in Osaka. At the beginning of this year, I went to Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park for a five months artist in residence and along with my solo at wad+. In November, I will have another one at norm gallery at Wakayama. Next year after my graduation from Mr. Ono Teppei, I plan to come back to Taiwan and start to build my atelier.
Artist Statement
Nature is what I am always fascinated about and connected with. To me, soil is the closest material to us all living creatures. All of our activities happen upon her, within her, throughout our whole lives. Soil in a way is like the notion of life. They are simple and embracing in any form and therefore, soil (clay) plays an important role in my art making process as questing for the meaning of life. The main material I use is clay, and depending on the environment, I will collect the natural materials around the area. Making and later putting the works into the kiln for firing, the works transform in the fire. Searching for the meaning of life from memories, dreams and experiences, by using clay, natural materials and fire as medium to carry out my action. Hopefully to provide the audience a journey to come back to ourselves, to begin with self understanding reflected from nature and clay, to rethink our living-self.
