Hkun Kuo
Hkun, born in Taipei city in 1967, earned his master’s degree at Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, Italy. He came back to Taiwan in 2000 and currently teaches at the Department of Fine Arts of Taipei National University of the Arts. He holds the belief that the purpose of arts is to fulfill life; therefore, artists must work hard in order to achieve the ultimate goal—making art a necessity in people’s life. Since 2008, Hkun’s works start to emphasize the “island culture” trait of Taiwan, which is the way of thinking and the production activities of migrants. Hkun’s works are cultural comments on such trait from his point of view. Through the form of visual arts, Hkun’s works portray the figure of the mind of a nation at the level of collective consciousness. Artists think that regarding reality, or a certain situation subjectively is being truthful. However, what is depicted in artworks becomes an alternative reality itself. Painting is a descriptive way of expression; it has to be unique while not carrying the function of storytelling. The theme in a painting should not be performative only to satisfy the reality depicted by the painting. The independence of our inner spirit, like summoning a past experience, for example, is not a part of any story. On the other hand, it is an impure life experience, showing a meaningful whole without the help of language.
